Custom Air National Guard Challenge Coins

The Air National Guard, which is also known as the “ANG”, was formed in 1947 as part of the National Guard. Combat-ready and composed of over 100,000 airmen, the ANG is a military militia reserve force that supports and protects the United States domestically (as well as Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands). Sections of the ANG normally fall under the control of their respective state governors, but may be made part of the active duty Air Force under federal control if needed.

The traditional Air National Guard Challenge Coins feature the Minuteman, which is present on the shield insignia of the ANG, flanked by two jet planes. The “Minuteman” model of an armed force, a small standing militia ready for combat within “a minute’s” notice,” was used by the United States until 1916. Then, when the National Guard was formed, the ANG took the Minuteman as their emblem. This Minuteman image, which features a man holding a musket in one hand and surveying his surroundings, is nearly identical to depictions dating back as far as 150 years ago. The Minuteman from which these images take inspiration is “the Concord Minute Man of 1775,” a statue by Daniel Chester French. This iconic statue stands in Concord, Massachuettes to this very day.
