Thunderbirds Challenge Coins

The Thunderbirds, formed in 1953 as the 3600th Demonstration Unit, are a group of skilled aviators whose shows have awed the American public for over 50 years. At the forefront of military aviation development, the Thunderbirds became the first supersonic aerial demonstration team in 1955, and have since performed thousands of demonstrations of their skills and techniques since their formation. While the group is based at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, the Thunderbirds tour the United States to host their flying demonstrations. During their tours, they often sell and distribute custom Challenge Coins.

You might think of the Thunderbirds, who call themselves “the Ambassadors in Blue,” as the rockstars of the USAF. Their demonstrations serve the dual purpose of pumping up a crowd and showing off the might and proficiency of the Air Force. At once incredible entertainment and a method of proving the skills of our military, the Thunderbirds inspire awe wherever they fly. In addition to their tours, they also attend the annual commencement ceremony at the USAF Academy in Colorado Springs, passing overhead the Falcon Stadium as the graduates toss their caps into the air.

Well known the world over for their aerodynamic stunts and incredible coordination, the Thunderbirds are emblematic of the dedication and pride of the United States Airforce. Throughout the years, there many Thunderbirds Challenge Coins have been minted for a variety of purposes. Some, called Showline Coins, are sold as merchandise at their shows and online storefronts. Others exchange hands as part of the military Challenge Coin tradition, wherein coins are awarded as commendation for the recipient’s efforts, or traded with others in celebration of an event or visit.

Celebrate Excellence has produced some of the most unique and memorable Challenge Coins that the Thunderbirds have ever endorsed. Included below is a gallery of some of our standout work on Thunderbirds Challenge Coins, which are incredibly varied in both design and scope. Many of the coins we’ve created for the organization are traditional, while others push the boundaries of coin design. All of them are among our proudest work. Thank you, Thunderbirds!
